Meso- and microporous carbons have been prepared using biomass as a precursor by heat treatment under nitrogen atmosphere followed by the heat treatment under ammonia atmosphere. The experimental results showed that the temperature of carbonization and activation significantly affect the pore structure and CO2 adsorption capacities of porous carbon materials. The surface areas of pristine carbons derived from alginic acid were measured as 258.2 m2 g-1 with a pore volume of 0.15 cm3 g-1. However, those values dramatically increased up to 1032.0 m2 g-1 with a pore volume of 0.65 cm3 g-1 after the ammonia activation at high temperature. The CO2 adsorption capacity of ammonia activated carbon derived from alginic acid increased from 1.48 to 2.20 mmol g-1 at ambient temperature and pressure.
