Aluminum hydroxide clusters are of interest for their unique chemistry when compared to monomeric aluminum. These clusters have various applications including thin films development and water treatment. The speciation and synthesis of these polyaluminum clusters are not well understood and may be important intermediates in the formation of other clusters as well as naturally occurring minerals. Utilizing a simple dissolution process with various acids, we observe a difference in the isolable clusters formed. We are trying to understand these clusters in simple solutions containing only one anion at a time through spectroscopy and computation.
