A C-C bond formation in organic synthesis is very essential. Until now, transition metals have been used as powerful catalysts for the cross coupling reaction of the C-C bond. Here, we would like to report C-C bond formation through a photocatalytic direct C-H arylation of isoquinoline with aryldiazonium salts under visible light (CFL lamp, 10 W) using titanium dioxide (TiO2). Different types of TiO2 were used as the catalyst, such as crystalline anatase and rutile phase, P25 (anatase/rutile 70:30), amorphous rutile TiO2, and amorphous/crystalline TiO2. The amorphous rutile TiO2 and amorphous/crystalline phased TiO2 nanomaterials, which can absorb visible light, are prepared through Li-ethylenediamine (EDA) treatment of rutile and P25 respectively, leading to selective reduction of rutile phase. The amorphous/crystalline phased TiO2 under visible light gave the highest yield for the C-H activation of isoquinoline with aryldiazonium salt derivatives, which will be presented in details.
