Hydrothermal dealumination of zeolite materials is an effective method used to modify the Si/Al ratio and to tailor the physical and catalytic properties of these aluminosilicate materials. Zeolite Y, a faujasite type zeolite, was treated with steam at 600oC over a series of time intervals. The kinetics of dealumination and spontaneous realumination was monitored utilizing 29Si MAS NMR, 27Al MAS NMR, and FTIR spectroscopy. Spectroscopic changes observed provide mechanistic insight into the dealumination and realumination processes.
