Difluoromethyl copper complexes are proposed to be important intermediates in a variety of difluoromethylation methodologies. However, due largely to their purported instability, the fundamental organometallic chemistry of these organometallic intermediates is poorly understood. Herein we report strategies for the stabilization and synthesis of the first isolable difluoromethyl copper complexes. The reactivity of these compounds with a variety of organic electrophiles, including the catalytic difluoromethylation of aryl iodides, is reported.
