A rational approach has been developed for the selective mono-arylation of primary amines and ammonia using tailored Pd-NHC complexes. Further, chiral and optically pure amino acid derivatives were mono-arylated with no racemization of the sensitive alpha proton. Discussion will involve the requirements for selectivity and how this knowledge was translated into ligand design. Mechanistic and computational aspects will be also included in these discussions.<br/>
