Storing energy in chemical bonds can form alternative energy fuels. One possible storage method is the reduction of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide reduction can occur by reaction with H<sub>2</sub> or by photo-catalytic reaction with protons and electrons. By these methods, carbon dioxide can be reduced to more useful products including methanol, formic acid, and carbon monoxide. These reactions all require a catalyst. Our lab has designed new chelating ligands that are based on pyridine and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) rings. These new ligands have been complexed to late transition metals from the first, second, and third rows of the d block. Ultimately, our goal is to find a ligand system that allows an earth abundant metal to catalyze the same reaction as a precious metal. We will report on the use of these metal complexes for catalytic carbon dioxide reduction.
