The dramatic increase in natural gas production has resulted in access to inexpensive light alkanes, which presents new opportunities for the chemical industry. The access to vast amounts of natural gas also provides motivation to develop new processes that provide more efficient routes for the conversion of natural gas into higher value compounds. Central to new catalytic processes is combining C–H activation with new strategies for the functionalization of hydrocarbyl groups. This presentation will focus on efforts to develop new chemical reactions for the conversion of light alkanes and olefins into higher value materials. A primary emphasis will be on new methods for the oxidative vinylation of arenes using ethylene, propylene and longer chain olefins that are produced from ethylene. <br/>
