Amines are of great importance in the chemical industry. They serve as key building blocks for the production of chemicals used in pharmaceutical, agricultural, surfactant and polymer industry. Unfortunately, most of today’s amine building blocks are derived from petrochemical feedstock. In addition, their current synthesis procedures generally require toxic, explosive or expensive reagents. In contrast to fossil resources, (ligno)cellulosic feedstock is highly functional, containing an average of one oxygen atom per carbon atom. Therefore they offer a unique opportunity for selective amination reactions towards value-added bio-based amines.<br/><br/>Our research focuses on the catalytic synthesis of valuable amine building blocks from (ligno)cellulosic biomass. This reaction involves a combination of carbon-carbon bond scission and carbon-oxygen to carbon-nitrogen bond transformation through innovative reductive amination cascade chemistry. Hereby, short bio-amines are selectively formed in presence of heterogeneous catalysts under hydrogen atmosphere.
