Polyamide 6 (PA6) is widely used in the fields of home textiles, transportation, construction and electronics due to its high mechanical strength, high abrasion and chemical resistance. To meet the strict fire safety requirements of cutting-edge fields, it is necessary to improve the flammability properties of PA6. Conventionally, flame retardants are usually introduced to the PA6 via melt processing. But the flame retardant in the composites is easily exuded in the water, especially for fiber, causing the deterioration of flame retardancy. In this paper, flame retarded PA6 (FRPA6) resin was prepared by introducing the phosphorus-containing flame retardant (P-FR) during the polymerization of PA6. P-FR is a kind of environmentally friendly flame retardant containing active functional group which can be chemically linked onto the polyamide chain as a monomer. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vertical burning test (UL94) and limiting oxygen index test (LOI) were utilized to investigate the properties of FRPA6. The results showed that the flame retardant tended to destroy the structure regularity of FRPA6 and decreased its crystallization. The incorporation of P-FR resulted in worse thermal stability of copolymer. The FRPA6 can reach UL94 V-0 rating according to the vertical burning test and a LOI value of 28.3% when the content of P-FR was 3.5wt%, indicating that good flame retardance could be obtained by introducing P-FR into the main chain of PA6.
