The preparation of ordered porous materials has attracted significant attention and is a rapidly growing field with various applications. The control over hierarchical structures can be accomplished by efficient hard or soft templating routes. A promising technique for the preparation of colloidal crystals as template material is the so called melt-shear organization technique. This technique enables the production of self-supporting films on industrial length scale. As a basic prerequisite the preparation of tailor-made hybrid core-shell architectures is essential. During melt-shearing which comprises an increase in temperature under application of moderate pressures, a radial flow of the polymer mass is induced and the hard core particles form a colloidal crystal in the viscous polymeric shell material. As a result, the core particles form a colloidal crystal structure in a soft, addressable matrix.<br/><br/>Herein we focus on a convenient route for the preparation of a single-source precursor for SiOC-based materials, consisting of tailor-made hybrid core/shell particles with adjustable crosslinking densities. The synthesis of monodisperse particles is realized by starved-feed emulsion polymerization protocols. The core material is made of PMMA that can be removed via thermal treatment. The comparably soft polyethylacrylate shell contains a substantial amount of poly(3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) (PMEMO), which enables the crosslinking via polysiloxane formation during the processing step. Due to the hybrid crosslinking strategy, the thermal stability of the matrix-building shell material is considerably increased.<br/>The resulting polymer spheres are converted into a hybrid polymer-silica film via the melt-shear organization technique. The final porous structure is conveniently achieved after thermal treatment of the hybrid film.
