Due to their ease of synthesis and propensity for making coordinatively unsaturated complexes, substituted tris(pyrazolyl)borate (Tp) ligands serve as excellent scaffolds for activating small molecules and also making model complexes to study small molecule activation. Of particular interest in this area of research are imido and nitrido ligands, which have the potential to undergo hydrogen atom transfer reactions, or effect nitrogen group transfer to various substrates. Our group has previously reported TpMII-X and TpMI-N2 complexes (M=Co, Fe, Mn, Cr; X=Cl, Br, I), which can undergo 2 electron oxidations to produce nitrido and imido species respectively. This presentation will describe novel first row transition metal imide and nitride complexes displaying tetrahedral coordination geometries supported by Tp ligands. The synthesis, structural characteristics, and reactivity of these complexes will be discussed.
