Polypyrrole oligomers were synthesized via kinetically controlled oxidative polymerization of pyrrole with molecular growth limited by the introduction of 2,4-dimethylpyrrole as a terminus molecule.  Colorful molecules formed initially, especially under acidic conditions, corresponded to charged, unterminated polypyrrole oligomers, and specific absorbance peaks indicated the extent of charge delocalization in these species.  Subsequent slow termination resulted in the joining of two growing chains and formation of neutral terminus-capped oligomer.  Alternatively, injection of another equivalent of 2,4-dimethylpyrrole achieved a faster termination to yield shorter molecules.  Synthesis in the presence of cylindrical sodium dodecylsulfate micelles resulted in a stable suspension of these polypyrrole oligomers when the ratio of oligomer to micelle was approximately one to one.  Trends in product molar absorptivity as a function of oligomer length suggested the occurrence of molecular coiling influenced by micelle size.  <br/> <br/>
