The products of 1,4-addition of nucleophiles to α, β-unsaturated ketones are of interest as they are easily amenable to further synthetic manipulations. We have studied the utility of bismuth bromide, erbium triflate and iron tosylate as Lewis acid catalysts for the Michael addition of indoles and pyrroles to a variety of chalcones as well as the conjugate addition of allyltrimethylsilane to α, β-unsaturated ketones. These catalysts have low toxicity and are non-corrosive, thus making them attractive from a green chemistry perspective. Results from these studies will be presented.
