Transition metal ions bound within porphyrins and porphyrin derivatives are ubiquitous in biological systems. These cofactors play critical roles in several biological processes, including oxygen delivery systems, metabolism of toxic materials, electron transfer and processing of essential nutrients. The synthesis of a water-soluble corrole will be used as a cofactor for replacement of the native iron heme group in myoglobin, for improvement of overall functionality. Introducing this synthetic porphyrin derivative transition metal complex to the active site holds the potential to aid in exploration of new forms of reactivity and catalysis. Additionally, this presentation will offer insight into the design of biocatalysts.
