There are several venomous snake species native to Arkansas.  Among the most common are rattlesnakes and copperhead snakes.  These animals use venom to acquire food and for self-defense.  The venoms contain numerous protein components including proteases, enzymes that hydrolyze proteins.  This study is designed to compare the proteases found in the venoms of the rattlesnake and two different copperhead species.  The type of proteases present will be determined using specific protease inhibitors as well as the main types of intermolecular forces present that are responsible for the extreme heat stability found in these enzymes.  The results will contribute to the sparse information currently available on the biochemistry of these important venom components.
