In this study, we developed novel Bi2WO6-graphene nanocomposites by intercalating two-dimensional (2-D) Bi2WO6 nanosheets into graphene oxide (GO) laminates and reducing GO through photoelectrons generated by Bi2WO6 under UV irradiation. The nanocomposites can be obtained as film after vacuum filtration of the hybrid Bi2WO6/GO aqueous colloidal solution. The ratio of Bi2WO6 to GO and the duration of photocatalytic reduction of GO are controlled to tune the photocatalytic property of Bi2WO6-graphene composites. The synthesized nanomaterials were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution-TEM, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and porosimetry analysis. We applied the 2-D nanocomposites to the photocatalytic destruction of microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a highly toxic cyanotoxin. The performance of the catalysts was evaluated at different solution pH values, dosages of catalyst, and initial MC-LR concentrations.
