We present facile synthetic routes to link peptidic structures with water-soluble Au(I)-phosphane complexes in order to create a versatile toolbox for the preparation of (bio)organic-inorganic hybrid materials. These functional materials can be obtained by the post-modification of such building blocks with biomolecules or peptides under mild conditions in aqueous media, leading to the construction of more complex, functionalized Au(I)-biomaterials in water.<br/>Furthermore, coupling of a small hydrophic peptide with a highly charged Au(I)-phosphane complex results in the formation of a new peptidic Au(I)-metalloamphiphile, which in buffered aqueous environments self-assembles into luminescent micellar nanostructures with an average diameter of 14 nm. In low ionic strength we have observed the formation of densely packed sheet-like morphologies.<br/>By adjusting the hydrophilicity and charged character of tailor-made phosphane ligands bound to the metal complex, we aim to position functional Au(I) complexes into anisotropic nanostructures and exploit applications in bioimaging, catalysis and therapeutics.
