Persulfate (S2O82-) is one of the most effective oxidant for in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO). Persulfate is known to react directly with some organic contaminants but the reaction kinetically slow for degradation of some toxic organics. Persulfate could produce sulfate radical (SO4●-) by activation processes and the radical allow quick degradation. Thus, activation processes are one of the essential factors of ISCO. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) is recently studied activator of persulfate. Several studies showed that activation by ZVI had improved decontamination efficiencies for some model organics. Current study compared the decomposition characteristic of several organic compounds in persulfate/ZVI system. The model compounds include anisole (KSO4●- = 4.9 X 109) and nitrobenzene (KSO4●- &lt; 106). Experimental data showed that the improved reactivity was due to the reductive degradation by ZVI itself. Better understanding of the persulfate/ZVI system will be helpful for ISCO. Further studies are required for evaluation of quantitative contribution of reactive species and reaction pathways.
