Developing predictive models for nanocrystal surface chemistry is key to unlocking their promise in a variety of energy-related applications. Borrowing from Malcolm Green’s covalent bond classification system, nanocrystal surface ligands can be characterized as L-type (2-electron donors), Z-type (2-electron acceptors), and X-type (1-electron donor/acceptors) ligands. This system is applicable to a wide range of nanocrystal materials, from covalent Group 14 nanocrystals to the more ionic metal chalcogenides. I will present a series of vignettes that emphasize the importance of characterization and ligand taxonomy while exposing a few overarching themes that govern nanocrystal surface chemistry. This will include recent work on X-type exchange with PbS nanocrystals, the investigation of ligand sterics and electronics with regards to CdSe nanocrystals binding, and the surface functionalization of Si nanocrystals.<br/>
