In order for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) to be realized as a viable technology for reducing carbon emissions, a low cost, environmentally-benign, and reversible sorbent material is needed. Chitin and its derivative, chitosan, which can be easily separated from the waste products of the seafood industry, have been demonstrated to perform this function when in solutions of costly ionic liquids and encased in nanoparticle capsules, but little work has been done to characterize their sorption performance in the solid state. We have demonstrated the success of solid state chitin- and chitosan-based sorbent materials in reversible carbon capture. Sorption efficiency was determined for pure and modified chitin and chitosan using IGA-MS, ATR-FTIR, and NMR studies. The results of this study demonstrate that chitin and chitosan perform competitively as a reversible, low cost sorbents for carbon capture with little modification and in the absence of complex ionic liquids. Current investigations are focused on use of decalcificated and de-proteinated powdered shells as a sorbent.<br/>
