Two types of new ternary Si-As compounds have been synthesized through solid state methods. The first is a family of layered compounds, CsxMySi1-yAs2 (M = Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga) that crystallizes in the orthorhombic Pnma (No. 62) space group. In these compounds, Cs cations are intercalated in the interlayer space of SiAs2 with a metal, M, partially occupying the Si position to balance the charge. The “Phonon Glass – Electron Crystal” concept predicts that structures with covalently bonded frameworks and loosely-bound “rattling atoms” that lower thermal conductivity are promising thermoelectric materials. The second type is represented by the compound Mg3Si6As8, which forms as deep red crystals in the chiral P4332 (No. 212) space group. In the crystal structure, Mg atoms are situated in the cavities of a 3D chiral Si-As framework. Details pertaining to the synthesis, crystal structures, and properties of these compounds will be discussed.
