In my laboratory, we develop new nanoscale materials and tools to address wide-ranging problems in physical and life sciences, spanning quantum information processing, plasmonics, nano-bio interfacing, and single-cell sequencing. In this presentation, I will describe recent examples of such efforts based on three nanoscale structures – diamond color centers, silicon needles and dielectric and metallic grooves. First, I will discuss our efforts on plasmonic crystals and metasurfaces and describe how we combine them with atomically thin semiconductors to realize integrated quantum electro-optic modulators with nanoscale footprints. Next, I will describe our effort involving color centers in nanoscale diamonds: these color centers can not only serve as solid-state atom-like qubits that can be coupled to photonic/plasmonic structures, but also function as ultrasensitive electromagnetic and temperature sensors that can be coupled to various chemical and biological systems. Finally, I will discuss a CMOS-nanoneedle electrode array that enables highly multiplexed interrogation and manipulation of mammalian electrogenic cells. These examples illustrate how the developments of new nanoscale structures open up new lines of scientific inquiries.<br/>
