X-ray spectroscopy methods have advantageous characteristics for operando electronic structure characterization of catalysts. Probing/penetration depth, chemical sensitivity (oxidation state, local geometry, ligands identification, etc.), ultrafast interaction with matter (enabling time-resolved studies down to fs) and low detection limits (detection down to sub-monolayers) allow catalytic studies to be performed in operando and under actual operating conditions (temperature/pressure) providing unprecedented information for the active catalytic sites. At Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource we have developed an arsenal of pioneer spectroscopy capabilities that span across soft, tender and hard X-ray energy regions. These include both conventional and high energy resolution spectroscopies which we have proved to provide superior characterization of catalytic processes. The current forefront research interests, via either gas phase catalysis or electrocatalysis, are mostly focused on water splitting, CO2 reduction and methane oxidation by the characterization of novel catalysts with fine tuned compositions and structures. Selected examples of the ongoing catalysis science program will be presented and discussed, emphasizing the current SSRL advantages for catalysts characterization as well as the future directions.<br/><br/>
