Suppression of magnetic ordering by solid substitution is closely related to unconventional superconductivity. We present a systematic study of a series of compounds K2MnSxSe2-x for changes in magnetic ordering using x-ray powder diffraction, neutron powder diffraction, SQUID and heat capacity measurements. Along with one-dimensionality in an orthorhombic setting and presence of chains of edge-sharing tetrahedra containing transition metal ion, their phase space richness is indicative of solid solution capability on all sites, making them ideal for studying the effect of solid solutions on the magnetism of these phases. A series of solid solutions of K2MnSxSe2-x (x=[0,1] with 0.1 increments) were synthesized by combining elements using tube-in-a-tube synthesis and verified for phase purity by x-ray diffraction. Se substitution on S anion site results in a large volume expansion. Magnetic susceptibility measurements using SQUID display rising nature, indicating a presence of weak interchain and strong intrachain antiferromagnetic coupling. We used neutron powder diffraction at POWGEN facility (Oak Ridge National Laboratory) to study the magnetic structure and magnetic phase diagram of this system. Heat capacity measurements were further used to verify the Néel temperatures (TN). TN suggests a small dependence of magnetism on the structural parameters in this system, requiring further studies to understand and explain the exchange interactions in these materials.
