There has been a renaissance in organic free radical chemistry over the past several years led by developments in transition metal mediated electron transfer chemistry. Visible light photoredox catalysis, in particular, has found application in the synthesis of complex molecules (natural products and pharmaceuticals), due to the chemoselectivity imparted by catalyst activation and the insensitivity of neutral radicals to polar functional groups. The development of methodologies involving organic free radicals underpinned on practicality and mechanistic understanding and their application toward the efficient preparative synthesis of pharmaceutical targets will be presented.
