Reduction of carbon dioxide to formic acid or to further reduced products is an important problem for both environmental and energy related reasons. There are limited studies on which factors influence the initial reduction to formate using metal hydride complexes. A series of POCOP nickel hydride and formate complexes were synthesized with different substituents (COOMe, F, H, OMe, NMe2) at the para position. The relative thermodynamics were examined by measuring the equilibrium constants between different hydride and formate complexes. Additionally, different groups of the phosphorous (tBu, iPr, cPe, Cy) were explored for steric effects. Different PCP and PNP pincer ligand systems were also investigated.
