Macroporous Magnéli phase Ti4O7 ceramic materials having extensive through-holes with an average pore size of 2.6 μm and a porosity of 21.6% were fabricated using a high-temperature sintering method. A reactive electrochemical filter apparatus based on the porous Ti4O7 ceramic materials (Ti4O7-based REF) was then set up. The pure water permeability of Ti4O7-based REF was determined to be higher than 12.9 m3 m-2 h-1 bar-1 under a dead-end flow mode by the standard flux-step method. The removal rate for perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) was about 119 mmol h-1 m-2 at a flux of 509 LMH under a current of 5 mA cm-2. The energy needed for mineralization of a mole PFOA was estimated to be about 19.5 Wh-1 g-1 PFOA at 0.25 initial concentration under a filtration mode at 5 mA cm-2, while 132.5 Wh-1 g-1 PFOA under a batch mode.
