Efficient water splitting using light as the only energy input requires stable semiconductor photoelectrodes with favorable energetics for the water oxidation and proton reduction reactions.  Our group and others have been exploring strategies to tune the electrode energetics by binding molecular catalysts (affecting the kinetics) or dipoles (impacting the electrode potentials and thus thermodynamics) to the semiconductor surface.  In this presentation, we will discuss our recent work on attachment of cobaltoxime as well as fluorinated aromatic molecules to p-GaInP<sub>2</sub> and p-GaAs surfaces.  We will discuss strategies based on both ionic and covalent interactions and how these chemical binding modes impact the electrode energetics under short- and long-term photoelectrolysis in aqueous electrolyte.<br/>
