The three distinct functional groups within the cysteine molecule create an synthetic opportunity to create multi-compositional materials. However, the increased functionality is also a synthetic hurdle. We developed a simple and efficient methodology to prepare novel mikto-arm star polymers from a cysteine core. Here, polymers of pre-determined molecular weights were prepared using reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) and modified to yield a terminal thiol functional group. This mercapto functionality was then incorporated using thiol-ene/yne chemistry to create various compositional arms.
