Natural products have proven to be of critical importance for the development of new therapeutics throughout history. They have continued to provide new chemical entities with unique structures, biological activities and mechanisms of action. The discovery of new synthetic methods has improved the accessibility of complex natural products and allow for improved synthetic routes. We have focused on versatile cyclization reactions to assemble the core structures of biologically relevant natural products such as the cannabinoids and membranolides. A combination of classical and modern approaches have been employed in order to develop novel syntheses of both scaffolds, giving rise to the natural products and unnatural analogs for additional biological evaluation.
