Many methods for mitigating biofouling in spiral wound water treatment membrane modules are known, however, the most effective options still often result in critical fouling and impacted performance over time. We have introduced the concept of radioluminescence membrane biofouling control (RMBC), with the goal of preventing bacterial colonization by producing germicidal UVC radiation within the membrane feed channels through X-ray-activated luminescent particles. Herein, results of our inaugural studies in pursuit of RMBC will be presented, including: optimization of UVC-emitting phosphors; quantification of UVC-induced bacterial inactivation under X-ray irradiation; modeling of X-ray penetration through RO element materials; assessment of membrane radiation tolerance; and economic feasibility. Overall, results indicated that the magnitude of radioluminescence efficiency, bacterial inactivation rates, and membrane damage are all likely consistent with effective and practical implementation to future biofouling control systems.
