Solar energy storage in chemical bonds is crucial in renewable fuel technologies. Splitting of simple molecules like HX (X = Cl, Br) is an attractive way to store solar energy.  Halogen photoelimination from main-group-based centers is the most challenging step in photochemical HX splitting cycles. We have synthesized carbene stabilized Sb(V) and Bi(III) chloro complexes and studied their photochemistry in the presence of a halogen trap when irradiated with UV- Vis light. This presentation will focus on our challenges and developments towards the elimination of molecular chlorine photochemically. <br/>
