The design rationale for several classes of ligands used to support heterobimetallic Ni/main group metal complexes will be discussed. Within each of these systems, we have found that the presence of a main group metal in the secondary coordination sphere of a Ni ethylene polymerization catalyst can have a profound impact on the rate, selectivity, and functional group tolerance of catalysis. Additionally, these multidentate ligand scaffolds can potentially recruit catalyst activators into the secondary coordination sphere of Ni, and we are currently investigating the implications of metal recruitment on catalyst activation and chain transfer.
