Global warming trends and scarcity of traditional fossil fuels have spurred research in the field of renewable, clean energy generation and storage methods. In this study we investigate a novel composite battery anode material and its effects on the efficiency of a lithium ion battery. Activated carbons functionalized with redox-active organo-modified polyoxometalate (POM) clusters were the focus of this study. TRIS (NH2C(CH2OH)3) moieties were attached to Anderson-type POM clusters [MnMo6O24]9- allowing them to be functionalized with four aromatic systems. UV-Vis absorption spectra indicate that benzene-functionalized POM clusters fully adsorb to the porous structure of activated carbon via π-π interactions, thus producing a highly redox active nanocarbon species. Future electrochemical analysis is needed to confirm if the POM/activated carbon composite demonstrates improved performance as an anode material.
