Advanced oxidation processes and ultrasonic irradiation are both remediation technologies that harness radical species for in-situ treatment of organic chemicals. The elucidation of synergistic and antagonistic relationships of these technologies aids in optimizing degradation. This work explores the relationship between ultrasound and thermally activated persulfate on aqueous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degradation via bench-scale sonoreactor studies. Previous studies demonstrate of sulfate radical generation in the hydroxyl radical rich and warm bubble-water interfacial region formed during cavitational collapse. This work explores the effects of bulk water temperature, hydrophobicity, and persulfate:PAH ratios on PAH degradation. The role of bulk water temperature is especially interesting due its complex effects on sonochemical degradation of PAHs and sulfate radical generation. Kinetic modeling is used to evaluate synergistic relationships.
