Bioremediation is one of the general methods to treat pollutants in soil, sediments and groundwater. However, the low concentration and restricted dispersion of dissolved oxygen in these areas have limit the efficiency of remediation especially in use of microorganisms which need oxygen to grow. Calcium peroxide is one of the oxygen releasing compounds which could release oxygen and has been applied to magnify the remediation efficacy of polluting areas. In this study, commercial calcium peroxide particles were grinded in wet condition in order to synthesize a nanoscale calcium peroxide particles. The characteristics of calcium peroxide particles and nanoparticles were analyzed and compared by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-Ray powder diffractometer. Our results showed that wet-grinded calcium peroxide nanoparticles with the addition of dispersants had the z-average particle size around 110 nm. In addition, we also observed that calcium peroxide nanoparticles had better oxygen release characteristics and patterns which generated a more suitable dissolved oxygen levels that promoted the diesel degrading cell growth than rest of their non-grinded form. Accordingly, our results suggested that wet-grinding of calcium peroxide particles to nanoscale could benefit their usage in bioremediation.
