Nanoparticles enhance or improve the performance of a number of commercial products. As a result, the use of nanoparticles in manufacturing has increased dramatically. New analytical tools are required to characterize the physical and chemical characteristics of nanomaterials. Capillary electrophoresis separations are developed to harness and quantify the interaction of nanomaterials with small molecules. The study of biomolecular affinity is important to identifying biological interactions and potential toxicity, and this capillary electrophoresis strategy provides a means to directly quantify the binding affinity of nanomaterials and physiologically relevant molecules. In addition, capillary electrophoresis can be used to evaluate the charge-to-size ratio of nanomaterials and the effect of different methods of sample preparation on nanomaterial properties. The information generated by capillary electrophoresis is complementary to traditional measurements of zeta potential. This capillary electrophoresis method is significant to nanomaterial characterization because capillary electrophoresis separations are rapid, consume small quantities of nanomaterials, and are cost-effective.
