We developed and administered an assessment to students at two different institutions for our current work in developing a learning progression up to and through the biochemistry curriculum. The assessment is on topics identified by faculty as being difficult for students and vital to the general chemistry/organic/biochemistry sequence. These topics include acid/base equilibria, energy diagrams and kinetics, and thermodynamics of ATP hydrolysis. The assessment is composed of 25 true/false chemistry content questions and 25 questions with a 5-point Likert scale of confidence corresponding to each content question, ranging from completely unsure to completely confident. This talk will explore the relationship between item accuracy and student confidence in those answers, and will also address how these results will guide our future work, particularly in pursuing follow-up student interviews.
