Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) has attracted increasing public concern due to their toxicity, bio-accumulation and persistence. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and other dioxin-like compounds including polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) and polychlorinated biphenyles (PCBs) are unintentional POPs that could be produced during industrial activities. The stack gas emissions of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds from industrial sources might pose potential risk to the surrounding environment and human health. Our previous study [1] indicated that the estimated daily intakes of PCDD/F for workers by air inhalation in the workplace of case secondary nonferrous smelters exceeded the tolerable daily intake recommended by World Health Organization. Thus, studying the air levels of POPs surrounding industrial sources might be helpful for estimating the human exposure. In this study, the stack gas samples and air samples from metallurgical sources were collected using automatic isokinetic sampling and high volume air sampling techniques, respectively. PCDD/Fs, PCNs and PCBs in stack gas and air samples were analyzed by isotope dilution high resolution gas chromatography combined with high resolution mass spectrometry method. The average toxic equivalent (TEQ) of PCNs and PCBs in the air samples collected from the metallurgical sources was 0.09 pg TEQ m<sup>-3</sup>, which were lower than that of PCDD/Fs with an average value of 0.20 pg TEQ m<sup>-3</sup>. The comparison of congener profiles of POPs between air and stack gas emission samples suggested that the stack gas emissions from metallurgical sources might contribute to the surrounding air levels of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds to some extent. These data might be helpful for understanding the impact of industrial emissions on human exposure.
