The concerted metalation deprotonation (CMD) mechanism is widely invoked for C-H bond cleavage reactions in which carboxylate ligands are present. Despite being integrally involved in the transition state, currently the effects of varying the electronic properties of the carboxylate are not well defined. Kinetic and computational studies of the cyclometalation of N,N-dimethylbenzylamine at palladium using electronically varied carboxylates will be presented.
