The UV/chlorine advanced oxidation process (AOP) is being considered as an alternative to the UV/H2O2 AOP by generating reactive species such as hydroxyl radicals (HO.) and RCS (Cl., Cl2.− and ClO.) for the degradation of micropollutants. This study compared the kinetics of the two processes in the degradation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in simulated water and real water. Among 34 PPCPs, the UV/chlorine AOP was more efficient on the removal of 23 PPCPs than the UV/H2O2 in pure water, while others are in opposite. Interestingly, the UV/chlorine AOP was more efficient on the removal of all the PPCPs than the UV/H2O2 AOP in simulated drinking water and a real wastewater. Water matrixes such as pH, bicarbonate and NOM had more significant effect on the degradation of PPCPs by UV/chlorine than by UV/H2O2. The underlying mechanism is ongoing and will be presented.
