It has been demonstrated that Mo and W based metathesis catalysts excel at even extremely low catalyst loadings. Feedstock quality granted loadings of 6 – 50 ppm (by mole) are common. Formulation of these air and moisture sensitive complexes as paraffin pellets made Mo-/W-catalyzed olefin metathesis a readily accessible technology which can be carried out on the benchtop of any laboratory. Versatility of these newly developed reagents called XiMoPacs is illustrated by various outside the glovebox transformations e.g. bifunctionalization of renewables, Z selective cross- and, enantioselective ring-closing metathesis. The improved air stability and homogeneity of the pre-weighted pellets provide synthetic chemists with a user-friendly tool to carry out high-throughput discovery effortless. Technologies for multi-kilogram-scale manufacturing of MAP complexes have been developed in a collaboration of XiMo and Soneas-Group. The multistep synthesis uses industrial solvents and telescoping techniques which avoided the isolation of sensitive intermediates and rendered a simple, scalable procedure and thus affordable priced catalyst. The catalysts produced in the pilot plant were exploited in cross-metathesis of functionalized olefins, ethenolysis of fatty acid methyl esters and propenolysis of a renewable substrate in multi-kg to several tons quantities.
