Lanthanide-based materials have unique photophysical properties and therefore a broad range of applications, such as displays, sensors and especially luminescent markers. The strong demand for greener systems is limited by solubility (or dispersibility) in aqueous solution, excitation wavelength in the visible or in the NIR region and stability of the lanthanide(III) complex. The synthesis of new europium(III) complexes with ligands derived from dipicolinic acid, their photophysical properties, correlation between structure of the ligand and emission quantum yield and ability to probe metal ions in solution will be discussed.
