With increasing frequency, reports are appearing in the literature of oxidative aliphatic carbon-carbon (C-C) bond cleavage reactions promoted by Cu(II) salts using O2 as the terminal oxidant. These studies generally begin with a screening of Cu(II) salts to determine conditions for the highest product yield. The time, energy, and costs associated with such screening processes could potentially be reduced through the development of an understanding of how the anions present in Cu(II) salts influence the reaction pathway. This presentation will focus on recent studies of the O2-dependent aliphatic C-C bond cleavage reactions of copper(II) chlorodiketonate complexes. Investigations of the influence of anion coordination on the energetics of O2 activation and O-O bond cleavage in these reactions will be emphasized.
