The imidazolium salts, 1,3-bis(pyridyl-2-ylmethyl)imidazolium, 1-(N-methylpyridinium-2-ylmethyl)-3-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)imidazolium, and 1,3-bis(N-methylpyridinium-2-ylmethyl)imidazolium were used to synthesize a variety of metal-NHC complexes. The structures of the complexes and catalytic capabilities toward Suzuki-Miyara and Heck coupling reactions in organic and aqueous solvents were compared. Initial catalytic results suggest catalysts supported by cationic NHC ligands are more susceptible to decomposition under catalytic conditions than those supported by neutral ligands.
