Several new synthetic methodologies are under investigation that utilize the decomposition products of alkyl triazabutadienes (TBDs).  New methods that use the diazonium species from this reaction as a precursor to either nucleophilic substitution reactions, or elimination reactions to form alkenes, depending on whether a nucleophile or base is added, are investigated. <br/>Alternative syntheses of precursors of the alkyl diazonium are explored in order to harness the reactivity of the species while forming the precursor under milder conditions.  Currently, the precursors to the alkyl diazonium ions are prepared from NHCs and alkyl azides.  New methods avoid the need to convert the alkyl substrate to an azide, and also avoid the strongly basic conditions of the current TBD synthetic route.
