This talk will illustrate the use of NMR, MRI, pulse field gradient (PFG) and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis to study structure and function in carbons for supercapacitors. Operando NMR methods allow the concentration of ions sorbed in the pores as a function of charge to be determined, while PFG methods allow diffusion within the pores to be monitored, the combination ultimately suggesting strategies for improved performance. The results will be contrasted with experiments that explore mechanisms and structural origins for high rate performance in battery electrode materials.
