Polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) have gained tremendous attention due to their broad application prospects in full-color flat-panel electroluminescence (EL) displays, and next-generation solid-state lighting sources. Among the currently available conjugated polymers as the emissive layer for PLEDs, it is a great challenge to develop high-efficient blue-emitting polymers, especially deep-blue emitters with a Commission International de l'Eclairge “y” coordinate (CIEy) &lt; 0.1, because it is difficult to meet the wide bandgap and excellent charge injection and transportation for the emitter simultaneously. Isomers based on the spiro[fluorene-9,9’-thioxanthene-S,S-dioxide] isomers (2,7-diyl and 2’,7’-diyl) ( FSO/SOF ), can tune the injection /transport of electron. In addition, the existence of sp3 hybridized carbon and non-planar structure make them as a weak conjugated or nonconjugated moiety. And therefore, FSO/SOF based derivatives exhibited high hole mobilities as donor materials, and a high current efficiency as blue emitters, respectively. As mentioned above, the blue light-emitting polymers were synthesized by Suzuki polycondensation via introducing FSO/SOF units into the polyfluorene or polycarbazole backbone, respectively. The polymers containing SOF moiety can effectively disturb the conjugation of the copolymers, which is helpful to narrow and blue shift for the EL spectra. With a single-layer device configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/CsF/Al, a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 3.76% with the CIE coordinates of (0.16, 0.08) for the polymer PPF-SOF15 and a maximum EQE of 2.22% with CIE (0.16, 0.11) for the polymer PPF-FSO5 were obtained, respectively. The results reveals that the spiro[fluorene-9,9’-thioxanthene-S,S-dioxide] isomers are promising moieties for the deep-blue light-emitting polymers.
