2,5-disubstituted pyrrole ligands offer a new class of redox non-innocent ligands. The appended arm on these ligands can be an imine, hydrazone, or oxime functionality, providing a series of related ligands.  Furthermore, these ligands have access to a quinone like 2 proton/2 electron couple that can be utilized in reactivity and catalysis. We have developed a robust synthetic protocol for these ligands, and have isolated a family of 1st and 2nd row transition metal complexes. When bound, this ligand displays redox non-innocent behaviour, with observable ligand based radicals. When in this reduced form, these complexes display diverse reactivity with a number of substrates including carbon dioxide, oxygen, and hydrogen acceptors such as quinone.
